Straw Craft

Straw craft is one of the traditional crafts widely practiced in the rural areas of Syrian provinces, mainly by women, who take pride and compete in creating the most beautiful and distinctive items such as baskets, plates, jewelry, brooms, and home decorations.

Famous Syrian Provinces: Damascus and its countryside – Aleppo – Hama – Homs – Raqqa - Al-Hasakah - Idlib

The main material is wheat straw after harvesting the stalks. Strong stems are collected, tied, and stored for use in the winter months when agricultural work decreases.

Brief Manufacturing Process:

ü      Soak the straw in water to make it soft and flexible.

ü       the straw with bright colors.

ü      Insert a filling made of fine, soft straw inside the piece.

 ü      Wrap the straw around the filling in circles, securing every three layers with a knot.

 ü      Finish with a small triangle for hanging the plate or decoration.

This craft represents an important part of Syrian rural heritage, and women continue to practice it today, preserving their skill and creativity across generations.
