Backgammon (Tawla Al-Zahr)
Backgammon, known in Syria as Tawla Al-Zahr, is one of
the oldest games in the world. Its history dates back to around 3000 BCE, as
backgammon boards were found in excavations in the city of Ur in Mesopotamia.
Syrian artisans excelled in crafting and decorating the
game boards and pieces using wooden mosaics, mother-of-pearl, bone, and ivory,
selecting the finest types of wood for production.
Backgammon remains highly popular in Syria today. Traditionally considered the game of men, it is also learned and enjoyed by children and women, preserving a part of Syria’s rich popular heritage across generations.
