Damascene Sword
The craft of
sword-making in Damascus is one of Syria’s ancient traditional crafts, passed
down through generations. Damascene artisans became renowned for producing
swords of exceptional quality, famous for their strength, elegance, and
precision.
Types of
Swords and Famous Names:
ü Yemeni, Indian,
and Qal‘a Swords: premium swords made from very old steel.
ü Kharsani,
Egyptian, and Damascene Swords: modern-forged swords with newly produced steel.
ü Famous Sword
Names: Al-Hussam, Al-Muhannad, Al-Sarim, Al-Battar, Al-Qardab, Al-Mas‘ur, Dhu
al-Fiqar, Al-Rasub, Al-Mukhzam.
ü Swords associated with the Prophet ﷺ: Al-Mukhzam, Al-Qal‘a, Al-Rasub, Al-Mas‘ur, Al-Battar.
Technical
and Aesthetic Features:
ü The blade is
stamped with the emblem “Lion of Allah – Damascene”.
ü Extremely strong
yet flexible, with a finely crafted core.
ü The blade has
twisted waves and is resistant to nicking (it retains sharpness and does not
easily chip).
ü Made of polished
steel with a grayish-golden hue tinged with blue.
ü The sword’s scabbard is made of iron and decorated with gold and silver wires in beautiful Islamic motifs.
The
Damascene sword was used as a functional weapon and was also considered one of
the finest gifts and valuable collectibles. Today, it stands as a symbol of
Damascus craftsmanship and is displayed in heritage exhibitions and private collections to preserve this art and
pass it on to future generations.
