Silver Craft in Syria
Silver craft is one of the oldest
traditional handicrafts in Syria and has been connected to daily life and
decoration for centuries. The cities of Damascus and Aleppo became especially
famous for finely made silver jewelry and decorative items, giving Syrian
products a strong reputation in the region and abroad.
In the past, craftsmen extracted
silver from mines and mixed it with copper to make it stronger and easier to
shape. The metal was then drawn, flattened, and formed into bracelets, rings,
and decorative vessels. Artisans in Damascus were also known for inlaying
silver into copper and wood, creating beautiful traditional designs.
This craft was passed down from
generation to generation within family workshops and old markets. Over time,
silver craftsmanship became a symbol of Syrian artisanal heritage and is still
shown today in traditional markets and cultural exhibitions to preserve the
craft and pass it on to new generations.
